Adult Education & Training Center
Audrey entered our program testing at the Adult Basic Education level. Her reading score was 6.9 and her math was 4.7 grade levels. After several months of hard work, she moved to the GED level by scoring 9.9 and 7.6, respectively. Audrey had to overcome some obstacles to come to school. She had had an unstable and traumatic childhood and was involved in an abusive relationship as a young adult. She only completed the 8th grade due to the instability. While in our program, she was working several hours per week and helping to care for her young nephew. Audrey’s first attempt at the GED test showed she could pass most parts of it. However, she did not pass the math section. The last obstacle for her to overcome was math anxiety. With more hard work, commitment and renewed self- confidence, she passed on her second try. Shortly after receiving her GED, she applied for college at Truman College. She was awarded a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of her extraordinary determination, motivation and initiative.
