Celebrating Older Americans Month

May is Older Americans Month (OAM). The 2023 theme is Aging Unbound, which offers an opportunity to explore diverse aging experiences and discuss how communities can combat stereotypes. We celebrated this year with an array of special activities to celebrate and honor the older Americans in our Adult Day Service program.

Chicago Commons’ uses the Reggio Emilia approach to teach children in our Early Education programs. This year, we invited our Studio Coordinators Bob Byrant and Adriana Rodriguez to facilitate art workshops with our seniors and adults with disabilities in Adult Day Services. Using natural materials for reference, participants were led in watercolor painting and ceramic sculpture.

Studies have found that seniors who engage in their artistic side have decreased rates of loneliness and depression, better hand dexterity and higher morale. Furthermore, health experts believe the creative arts can enhance cognitive function and induce psychological and physiological healing.

In a Drexel University study, just 45 minutes of creative activity significantly reduced cortisol levels and stress, regardless of artistic ability. Older adults who get involved in music, dance, painting, and storytelling programs also experience less depression. Imagination and creativity can give seniors a new lease on life!
