Celebrating Children and Learning: Our Commitment to Early Childhood Education

At Chicago Commons, we are continuously inspired by the strength, joy, and spirit of the children and families we serve. This spring, we celebrated these qualities in two special ways, reaffirming our commitment to nurturing creativity and growth in early childhood education.

A Joyful Celebration at the Day of the Child Parade

We had a fun time participating in the Day of the Child Parade in Pilsen, Chicago. Our children, families, and staff gathered for a fun-filled day that honored the heart of our community—Chicago’s children.

A Transformative Reggio Emilia Study Tour

In April, six of our dedicated team members had the life-changing opportunity to attend a Reggio Study Tour in Reggio Emilia, Italy funded by private philanthropy. From April 12–19, they immersed themselves in the Reggio Emilia approach—a child-centered educational philosophy that emphasizes creativity, collaboration, and active learning.

Visiting the schools that inspired this educational model was truly eye-opening. The experience reinforced why we focus on curiosity, creativity, and respect for each child’s individuality in everything we do at Chicago Commons. The insights gained from this tour will shape our continued work to provide a learning environment where children’s unique strengths are celebrated, and their curiosity is encouraged.

A heartfelt thank you to our amazing team members who represented Chicago Commons with passion and purpose:

🌟 Timia Strickland, Assistant Director 0–3, Nia
🌟 Emilia Barrera, PEL Teacher, PFC
🌟 Lawanda Peterson, Assistant Teacher 0–3, Nia
🌟 Alisha Blink, Site Director, Taylor
🌟 Israel Saucedo, Education Coordinator, External Partnership Team – Cermak
🌟 Karina Slaughter, Chief Early Learning Officer

These two experiences—our participation in the Day of the Child Parade and the transformative study tour in Reggio Emilia—remind us of the power of community and the impact of high-quality, child-centered education.
