Celebrating Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus

In recognition of Women’s History Month, Chicago Commons gathered to honor Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, founder of AARP.  Born in San Francisco in 1884, Andrus spent much of her childhood in Chicago before earning her Bachelor of Philosophy degree from the University of Chicago and beginning her career in teaching. At night, she dedicated herself to educating students at pioneering settlement houses like Chicago Commons, leaving a lasting impact on the city’s educational landscape.

After nearly thirty years in education, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus made the decision to retire and care for her ailing mother, Lucretia. This compassionate decision led to the establishment of two impactful organizations, the National Retired Teachers Association and AARP, both of which have significantly improved the lives of millions.

This month, we commemorate Dr. Andrus’ contributions by reflecting on her dedication to empowering others through education and community engagement. Our Adult Day Services served cake in her honor, and we celebrated her enduring legacy and the spirit of service that continues to inspire us in our own work.

Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus’s story reminds us that shared gestures, even sharing a slice of cake, can serve as meaningful tributes to those who have shaped our world. As we savor each bite, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering a community, just as Dr. Andrus did at Chicago Commons more than a century ago.
